“Ship of Fools” - World Party
snuh:
World Party: Ship Of Fools
World Party were pretty much Karl Wallinger’s solo project, which he started after leaving The Waterboys in 1985. This version of Ship Of Fools charted at #4 in Australia, #27 in the US and #42 in the UK.
We’re setting sail to the place on the map
From which no one has ever returned
Torn by the promise of the joker and the fool
Oh, Ian Astbury hotness.
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
This song immediately summons memories of my High School days.
Shut up. I’m not old!!!
Through a quarter-century and multiple break-ups and reunions, The Cult survives still. Unfortunately (at least, to me), they never really recaptured the sound they had in the beginning. That, or I’m just bitterly nostalgic.
In Rip It Up and Start Again, Simon Reynolds memorably skewers a chunk of the goth scene by tracing how Southern Death Cult led to Death Cult which led to the Cult—i.e. the degeneration of goth romanticism into bloated pseudo-mysticism. That said, this song is still my favorite Gran Turismo 3 track though.
“Transmission” - Joy Division
“Transmission”, Joy Division, from the RCA Sessions, Arrow Studios, Manchester, May 3rd and 4th 1978.
i think this is my favourite version.
“Warm Leatherette” - The Normal
I am pretty sure my first encounter with this song, Ed was on that little “window pane” outing in Coral Gables led by Carlos S. We went to someone’s house, a friend of Carlos’s. This guy had lots of records. And this was one of them.

I think I wanted to be John Lydon in high school. Really.

“Come Dancing” - The Kinks

I discovered this song in 1984 or 85 when I was glued to MTV. I sincerely don’t remember ever doing my homework. When I saw this video, I had no idea that the Kinks were a band that had been around since the late 60s. The song tells a story, is tinged with nostalgia and musically is not gimmicky. In fact, it didn’t seem particularly modern at the time it was released. But it was just a good song. Made me want to enter that world.

“Headhunter” - Front 242
OK, so this song was “top of the line” industrial/electronic? It’s actually still very appealing to listen to, but the beats are kind of slow compared to lots of stuff that’s happened since via drum ‘n bass and hip hop. The lyrics are so fun to listen to now: ”I’m looking for this man, to sell him to other man, sell him to other man … ” Sounds like Frankenstein. Or a Belgian mid-80s industrial musical group. So bad ass, “ve can’t speak English … “
